West Bengal: Incessant rainfall throws normal life out of gear; see pics-
Uninterrupted rainfall was observed in West Bengal on Friday, particularly in South Bengal, due to strong low pressure in Bangladesh and neighboring West Bengal. In several parts of southern Bengal, including Calcutta, the situation was flooded.
According to the Kolkata Municipal Company (KMC), all the locked gates of the Ganges River were opened and all pumping stations were installed to restore the flooded Kolkata.
Not only Calcutta, but the heavy rains seen in Hooghly, Bankura, Purulia, East, and West Burdwan also led to the collapse of mud walls that claimed the lives of many people across the country.
The more remote areas of West Midnapore were closed as the Silabati and Para rivers overflowed and several mud houses were also removed.West Bengal, July 30 (ANI): Commuters wade through a waterlogged road after heavy rainfall at Patipukur Railway Bridge, in Kolkata on Friday. (ANI Photo)
As the water took a while to recede, traffic congestion subsided as the State’s main roads in Bangkura, Jargram, and West Midnapore were completely melted.
Trains on the east and south-east railways had to be rebuilt, as trains also fell underwater due to heavy rains at night.
At a time when people are experiencing hardships as a result of natural disasters, political leaders have not missed an opportunity to insult one another.
Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has criticized the Kolkata Municipal Company for failing to improve the city’s sanitation system.
“Mamata Banerjee has been considering converting Kolkata to London, but the sewerage system is still in place so that water can accumulate even in the absence of heavy rainfall,” Sovendu said.
Responding to Suvendu’s claim, KMC President Firhad Hakim assured that in the future Calcutta and surrounding areas would not be flooded.
A week on, Twitter unlocks Rahul Gandhi’s handle after suspending it for tweeting pic with Delhi rape victim’s kin
New Delhi: Twitter unlocks Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s handle on Saturday, a week after his account was suspended, but not before the opposition party accused him of bias.

Sources said the Twitter accounts of some of the group’s leaders who shared similar photos were restored.
“Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account has been reopened,” a party official said, adding that other leaders’ accounts had also been restored.

Rohan Gupta, President of the Social Media Department of Congress, also confirmed that Twitter had opened all accounts linked to Congress, including Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday morning, adding that this was a victory for the Indian people. The group also said it had not deleted its Twitter account.
The former Congress leader was outraged on Friday accusing Twitter of “interfering in the national political process” and said closing his hand was tantamount to “attacking the country’s democratic structure”.
Gandhi, in a statement he sent via video on YouTube entitled “The Dangerous Game of Twitter”, said it was not a neutral and purposeful process and that he was “indebted to the government”.
