Germany beats Portugal to win 3rd Under-21 Euro title

Ljubljana, June 6, 2021 (AFP) – Germany won the European Under-21 Championship for the third time as Lucas Nmecha clinched a 1-0 victory over Portugal in Sunday’s final in Ljubljana.

The goal came just four minutes into the second half in the Slovenian capital, with Ridle Baku setting up Nmecha and the striker’s first touch taking him around goalkeeper Diogo Costa before heading home.

Striker Nmecha, 22, owns Manchester City but has been loaned to several clubs and recently enjoyed a good performance in Belgium against Anderlecht.

Bayer rookie Florian Wirtz Leverkusen cast as Germany beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-finals also crossed the finish line in the first half.

Germany also won the U-21 titles in 2009 and 2017 before losing 2-1 to Spain in the final of their final tournament in Italy in 2019.

Germany player Stefan Kuntz, who won 96 Euros, was also responsible for the team that won the title in 2017.

It was Portugal’s second defeat in the final of this tournament in four editions after Sweden’s penalty shoot-out in 2015.

Germany hopes their first team will be inspired by their U21 squad as they face Portugal in the Euro 2020 group stage later this month.
